Shadow of the STorm

Out of Egypt #2

By Connilyn Cossette

Book 2 of Connilyn Cossette’s Out of Egypt series opens at the foot of Mount Sinai, where the Hebrews are living in freedom after their exodus from Egypt. Shira and Dvorah are two very different women; however, both have pasts they are trying to bury. As the new nation multiplies, midwives are needed. Both women begin apprenticing under Reva, a woman taught by Moses’s own sister. But when tragedy strikes during one of Shira’s deliveries, she lets her own doubts and fears draw her away from the calling she loves. Then Shira discovers that the man she has developing feelings for is already married—and it’s to the woman involved in the tragic delivery. How can she follow God’s plan for her life when she feels so betrayed and disappointed? Meanwhile, Dvorah has a secret agenda, and she’ll do whatever it takes to escape the difficult circumstances she’s been living with since her husband’s death, even if it means casting false stones at Shira.

Cossette delivers another historically fascinating, character-rich story. It’s easy to feel the time period within these pages. The plot has many layers to peel away, including character backstories and motivations, mounting unrest between the tribes, and plots against the Hebrew community. With so many twists, turns, and surprises, I found it difficult to put this book down. Most satisfying of all is Shira’s journey, which is deeply felt and easy to relate to. However, readers should note there is some mature content. Nothing is explicit by any means, but implications are clear.

I felt this novel surpassed Cossette’s first (which I loved) in terms of historical accuracy and plot depth. Shadow of the Storm will satisfy readers on many levels. It’s simply great storytelling, and I highly recommend it. Is book 3 out yet?
